Suspense and the usual hemisphere of discovery within which a bait can be seen, smelled or heard becomes a sphere with double the volume to double your chances.  

Floating plastic worms, it's equally effective with an air-injected night crawler.  If you still fish with bait, do vary the line to hook distance so the bait is just off bottom weeds or marl bottom.

With light tackle and neutral density natural baits you can crimp a fly fisher's strike indicator onto the eye of the hook. This sends your bait floating up when you pause bottom-scratching retrieves.
